Interview with Dakota from Skye & Staghorn

Known for its fusion of sleek designs and unique detailing, WA label Skye & Staghorn has cemented itself as a leader in the Australian swimwear industry. We saw Skye & Staghorn's new collection Medina at Swim + Resort Series 2016, which was inspired by the rich culture of Morocco. We recently had a chat with Dakota to find out a bit more about her and her distinctive label.

Talk us through how Skye & Staghorn was born.

Back in 2012 I was 21 and eager to design something of my own, fill the gap in the market and get creative.

What is the inspiration behind your new collection, ‘Medina’?

Morocco was definitely an inspiration behind the collection, I visited the Medina markets in Marrakesh when I was 20 and it was one of the most colourful and exciting places so I was going back to memories of all the beautiful prints and travels I did over there.

How do you think your label is unique within the swimwear market?

We are doing a lot of hand beaded styles which I’m not seeing anywhere else so I definitely think this is unique to our brand and becoming a bit of a focus point for us.

Do you have a favourite summer travel spot?

Rotto and down south are always a summer favourite.

What is your go-to swimwear style?

Minimal and practical, I have a 1 year old so something that won’t fall off while I’m chasing her around.

What are your top three summer essentials?

  • 50+ sunscreen
  • A good beach bag
  • And of course a SS swimsuit, my MEDINA plunge full piece is my go to at the moment

Any words of wisdom for emerging designers?

Stay true to your vision and the hard work will pay off.

What’s next for Skye & Staghorn?

I’m currently designing next season's ranges and getting ready for Miami Swim Week next July, apart from that enjoyng the summer at home in Cottesloe with my family.
