MAASAI founder and director, Bojana Gajic is a busy and passionate mother of one. Bojana always had a passion for fitness, which grew even more after giving birth to her son, so she decided to create an activewear label that was of good quality, well-designed and reasonably affordable.

MAASAI is now stocked in HATCH, which is currently located in Garden City Perth.

See our interview with Bojana below.

How did it all begin for Maasai Activewear?

The idea came to me after giving birth to my son. During my pregnancy I gained 25kgs. After I gave birth I was eager to go back to gym as soon as possible to get back my pre pregnancy shape. During this time I struggled to find good quality activewear at a reasonable price. I was suprised by the quality of some high end activewear that I paid over $100 for pair of leggings and in my opinion it definitely wasn’t worth the price tag.

Originally, I wanted to start a swimwear label and was in process of designing, when I changed my mind and thought why don’t I design good quality activewear instead, and 2 years later here I am. I find it so comfortable and stylish now days that you can never go wrong with nice pair of tights and crop.

My days are usually spent wearing mainly activewear, whether I’m shopping, at the gym, or taking my son to park, so I thought why not wear my own brand. I thought I spend more time wearing activewear than swimwear, as do most woman.

Describe a typical day in your life.

My life is quite hectic at the moment, but I love what I do. I agree with the quote “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.” I get up at 6am and go to a F45 class at 7am. By the time I get home and shower, It's 8.30am and my husband and son are awake. Then it’s my standard morning routine; making breakfast, house duties etc. By about 10am I start doing my emails, packing orders and then head off to the post office to send everything off. I am usually done with all of this by 12-1pm and then it's time to make lunch time.

Once all my work and house duties are done, I take my son out to the park or for a bike ride and spend some quality time with my family. By 6pm I’m home making dinner and doing my mum routine, bathing my son and he is in bed around 7.30pm. Then I have some me time, until I am back working and doing more emails/orders etc. This is usually a good day for me but some days I have to fit in shop visits, cleaning, washing and more.

Maasai has been worn by many influencers including Khloe Kardashian, who spoke about the quality of your products on an episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians. Tell us about this experience.

This was insane! I never thought in a million years someone like Khloe Kardashian would be talking about my brand on KUWTK. I have watched this show since 2007. I was in shock for days and even now when I think about it, I have to pinch myself as it feels like a dream sometimes. There are so many labels that she has worn; top brands like Adidas, Puma, Nike etc., which have been around for decades. For her to speak about my activewear brand and its quality says it all.

Khloe is such an amazing woman. I couldn’t believe it when I received my first letter from her. That was such a surprise and one of my highlights. My dream would be to meet her in person one day. She is such an inspiration to me.

How is your label unique within the activewear market?

What sets us apart from our competitors is our quality, yet affordable pieces. When we say squat proof, we mean squat proof. And if the Kardashians are commenting on our collection on their TV show, we must be doing something right.

Tell us about your creative team

What most people don’t know is that I do everything myself. All the emails, orders, packing, posting, social media, website, orders, designs, you name it. It’s full on most of the days with everyday life, family and trying to do it all but I wouldn’t have it any other way. My husband helps me with colour and print choices and provides his general opinion on style, design etc. He seems to have a good eye. I was close to not releasing the first green print Jungle look that Khloe wore, but it was my husband who convinced me to.

What’s next for Maasai Activewear?

I am currently working on a new winter collection launching very soon, so that has been keeping me extra busy lately. This year, my goal is to hopefully expand and introduce more international stockists. I currently have a few in Australia and overseas, but i am aiming to have at least five more international stockists by the end of the year. I have a few more celebrities I will be working with, which is also very exciting. A dream would be to showcase in Telstra Perth Fashion Festival along side all the amazing Australian Designers.
